Homocysteine biosynthesis and biochemical roles
Homocysteine is not acquired from the diet.Instead, it is biosynthesized from methionine via a multi-step process. First, methionine receives an adenosine accumulation from ATP, a acknowledgment catalyzed by S-adenosyl-methionine synthetase, to accord S-adenosyl methionine (SAM). SAM again transfers the methyl accumulation to an acceptor molecule, (e.g., norepinephrine as an acceptor during epinephrine synthesis, DNA methyltransferase as an average acceptor in the action of DNA methylation). The adenosine is again anatomize to crop L-homocysteine. L-Homocysteine has two primary fates: about-face via tetrahydrofolate (THF) aback into L-methionine or about-face to L-cysteine.
